Roane Youth Leadership - Application Due by January 31, 2020

Applications are now being accepted for the next Roane County Youth Leadership (RCYL) year. The program is open to students from all High Schools in Roane County as well as private school and home-schooled students who will complete the 9th, 10th or 11th grade in the spring of 2020. RCYL is a partnership between the Roane County Chamber of Commerce and Roane State Community College.

The goal of the yearlong program is for students to improve their leadership skills through class study, interactions with community leaders and exercising the skills they learned through a community service project. The program starts with students participating in a week of day events, typically the first week of June. Another component of the program requires students to attend local government sessions including County Commission, City Council and School Board Meetings. In addition the students will have at least three after school sessions through the school year and then celebrate their completion of the program the following spring with a graduation.

Students from across the county each year develop a camaraderie that is unique to this program in that they are in class, meet after school, attend meetings, work on a project together and then graduate the program united with students outside their respective high schools.

Interested students will complete an application to be considered for the program. Selection is made by an independent panel and is based on the student application as well as recommendations from their principal, a teacher and community references.

Applications can be found on the web page of Leadership Roane County ( and the Roane County Chamber of Commerce. Applications must be received by January 31, 2020. No late applications will be considered. If you have questions about the program, you may call (865) 376-5572 or email
