Guidance News — The University of Tennessee — Engineers Day

Dear High School Faculty:

This year the University of Tennessee College of Engineering is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Engineers Day.  Each October, undergraduate engineering classes are dismissed for one day to allow university students and faculty to spend time interacting with hundreds of potential engineering students from high schools across the region.  This year’s event is on THURSDAY, October 25, 2012.

Last year, nearly 1,000 students from 42 different high schools traveled to UT’s Knoxville campus to explore and learn about the various aspects of engineering through discussions, project demonstrations and exhibits prepared by UT engineering student clubs and societies.  This year’s participants will once again get an overview of the different engineering disciplines and see examples of how an engineer’s work impacts daily life.  It is our goal that your students’ involvement in Engineers Day will inspire their interest in the ever-growing field of engineering.

This year’s Engineers Day opening ceremonies will be held Thursday, October 25th, 2012 at 10:00 – 10:30 AM in the Alumni Memorial Building, Cox Auditorium (1408 Middle Drive).  http://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/transportation.html

If you will be attending this year’s event, please complete the on-line registration formhttp://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/register.html

If you are unable to register on-line, please print the registration form and either fax or mail it in to our office location.  Space is limited, so be sure to get your group registered soon.

The day’s schedule is listed at: http://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/schedule.html

Also, dining locations you may visit during the lunch break are viewed at:  http://www.utdining.com/

All information for the event can be found at:  http://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/

Engineers Day features four competitions for visiting students.  You can view rules and regulations for the Quiz Bowl, the Egg Drop Competition(http://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/PDFs/Egg%20Drop%20Rules.pdf), the ASCE High School Balsa Wood Bridge Competition (http://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/PDFs/Balsa%20Wood%20Bridge%20Rules.pdf) and the Food Battery Competition (http://www.engr.utk.edu/ed/PDFs/Food%20Battery%20Rules.pdf).  If you would like more information, please contact the Engineering Academic and Student Affairs office at (865) 974-2454.
