PLAN Test for Sophomores — October 26, 2011

Faculty, Parents, Sophomores… Wednesday is the PLAN Test for all Sophomores .  10th graders will report to 1st period.  An announcement will be made at 8:35 AM to release the students.  Students will be testing 1st period through 3rd period on 10/26/11.

Students,

The PLAN test is administered by the American College Testing Program to help you prepare for the ACT. You will be tested over common high school skills and knowledge, usually in the fall of your sophomore year.

The PLAN test includes 50 questions on English (usage/mechanics, rhetorical skills), 40 questions on mathematics (pre-algebra, algebra, geometry with calculators allowed), 25 questions on reading comprehension and 30 questions on science.

The college and career aptitude feedback from your PLAN test results are excellent tools to get you thinking about life after high school graduation, both in terms of college and career. As with all standardized testing, it is important to work through the sections, answering the questions that come easiest to you first so you don’t get bogged down on the hard ones.

Parents,

If you’re the parent of a 10th grader, now is a critical time to talk with your son or daughter about their future. PLAN can provide both of you with information that helps your decision-making process.

Taking PLAN is an important step toward making college a reality. It helps you and your son or daughter identify:

■ skills and knowledge they need to succeed in college
■ areas where they need extra help or additional courses
■ career areas that match their interests

PLAN also provides an estimated ACT score—one of the best indicators of readiness for college. And PLAN also connects your son or daughter to more information about college and financial aid choices.

Students who take PLAN are more likely to be ready for college. Learn more about other ACT resources for students at www.actstudent.org.

PSAT/NMSQT Official Student Guide 2011

On Wednesday, October 12, juniors will be given the opportunity to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test (NMSQT). The PSAT/NMSQT provides students with practice for the SAT. Research shows that students who take the PSAT increase their SAT scores significantly. The average increase in score is 120 points.

This exam is the qualifier for the National Merit Scholarships.

The benefits of taking the PSAT/MNSQT are:

  • Improves teaching and learning for both students and educators: reports will help identify skill strengths and gaps
  • Provides access to My College QuickStart: a personalized college and career planning tool which helps students search for colleges, explore majors and careers as a personalized SAT study plan
  • Identifies potential success in AP courses
  • Prepares students for the SAT
  • Provides entry to National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions as well as other scholarship and recognition programs

If students choose to participate in the College Board Student Search Service, colleges, scholarship programs and educational opportunity organizations will send information about educational and financial aid opportunities they offer.

Students should review the PSAT/NMSQT Official Student Guide. The guide is full of information to read prior to the test. There are tips for taking the test as well as a full length practice test so that the students are familiar with the test questions and format. The practice test will help students to understand the directions and be familiar with the types of questions to expect. Preparation does make a difference! Learn more about PSAT and SAT resources on their website: www.collegeboard.com.
